The Padma Shri Award is one of India's highest civilian honours, granted to those who have made great achievements in their particular disciplines, i.e., sports, arts, agriculture, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, civil services, trade and industry, literature and education, and others. In the field of agriculture, the Padma Shri Award aims to recognise and honour remarkable individuals who have made significant contributions to the agricultural sector, benefiting both farmers and the country as a whole. For 2023, the President has approved the conferment of 106 Padma Awards including 3 duo cases (in a duo case, the Award is counted as one). This year 6 Padma Vibhushan, 9 Padma Bhushan, and 91 Padma Shri Awards.

Padma Shri Awardees for Agriculture 2023

1. Tula Ram Upreti - He is a 98-year-old self-sustaining organic farmer from Sikkim who uses only traditional methods of farming and reduces the dependence of farmers on the agrochemical industry.

2. Nekram Sharma - An organic farmer from Himachal Pradesh is recreating the ancient agricultural system Nau-Anaj, reducing water consumption, and also producing local indigenous seed and distributing it to 10,000+ farmers at no cost.

3. Patayat Sahu -
An Odisha medicinal plant farmer cultivated 3,000 unique medicinal plants and gathered 500 types from throughout India. Helped with the free treatment of people and the distribution of seedlings to villages in Nandol.

4. Cheruvayal Ramam - Preserved 52 traditional varieties of rice—Rakthashali and Gandhakasala—and promoted cultivation of indigenous rice varieties among farmers in Kerala and the Kurchiya Tribe.
